One of the most defining features of the era of syncopated rhythm from the late 1930s and early 1940s certainly cannot be overlooked: many of the catchy tunes from this period, written by the best authors and composers and sung by the most talented vocalists, had animals as protagonists.
Il pinguino innamorato, Il gatto in cantina, La canzone delle mosche, Maramao perché sei morto, La sardina innamorata… all these songs brought to life the inhabitants an imaginary zoo that danced to the rhythm of swing and, even more importantly, provided a much-needed escape from reality – an escape from a regime on its last legs, from the economic hardships caused by sanctions, laws destroying personal liberty and an impending war.
Topolini, mici e pinguini innamorati is a show that presents that era and its musical repertoire with levity, while still being full of anecdotes and information. An entertaining lesson on the history of costume enriched by a selection of humorous songs performed by singing sisters, who made swing their mission in life.
